Trama

In the lonely American wilderness north of the Ohio river, the pioneer Luckett family face isolation, the hardships of primitive living, privation and sorrow. It is through the mind of Sayward, the oldest daughter and the staunchest of them all, that the events are viewed, from the death of the mother overcome by her horror of the trees (which her youngest children view as a paradise) to Sayward's own revolt against them.
