Trama

La scena brulica di Zanzibar poco prima della guerra civile americana, quando l'isola dei chiodi di garofano era un centro della tratta degli schiavi africani. A ciò si aggiunge Hero Athena Hollis, un bluestocking di Boston pieno di onestà e inchinato alle buone azioni. Poi incontra Rory Frost, un cinico, malvagio, abile e buon commerciante di schiavi.
